This device does not respond to sound, it only responds to pysical vibrations. Vibrations around all axis can be detected. By passing a current of not more than 1mA through the device and measuring the voltage across it, one can get a voltage level across the device that corresponds the the amount of vibrations the HDX-2 is subjected to.
